Big East Preseason Player of the Year: Luke Harangody

National Hoops Big East Preseason Player of the Year
Luke Harangody, PF, Senior, Notre Dame

There isn’t a player in college basketball with a better career scoring average over the last three years than Harangody. The 6-8 brute has been the nuts and bolts of the Irish program and the most successful player for the program since Troy Murphy.

Harangody averaged a Big East high 23.3 points and 11.8 rebounds a game last year as a junior and even handed out a couple of assists a contest. He’s the top returning rebounder in the conference, too.

The first time I saw Harangody was at the Spiece Run 'n Slam in Fort Wayne, Indiana. That was the perfect place to watch the bull in a china shop big man.

I wrote: "He's not going to win any points for style and grace but Luke Harangody will earn the respect of true hoops fans. The 6-foot-8, 245-pound class of 2006 prospect is a blue collar post player that loves to battle for boards, dive for loose balls and score inside the paint."

He hasn't changed a bit.

RSCI rankings had Harangody as the No. 83 ranked player in the class of 2006.

  1. Harangody is an overrated player based on the sheer amount of shots he takes. If the ND program had anyone else that could create and not just take outside shots, his scoring average wouldn't be nearly as high. In that same regard, there are a bunch of guys all over the Big East who could average that much or at least around that much if they were taking 20 shots a game and missing over half of them.

  2. Disagree. Only because he has consistently produced since the day he arrived at South Bend. I thought he'd be a role player and a JR/SR starter. Totally surprised me, Harangody did. He's very talented and a guy that Notre Dame has clearly built around. Hard to call him overrated in that regard.

Is Steph Curry overrated? Same theory.
